On the basis of the non-occurrence of perpetual motion, Carnot was able to demonstrate that: (1) no heat engine operating between two reservoirs can be more efficient than a Carnot engine operating between the same reservoirs (Carnot’s theorem); (2) the efficiency of a Carnot engine depends only on the temperatures of the reservoirs and not on the nature of the working substance (the corollary to Carnot’s theorem).
